First Shipment of Weed-Laced Soda Actually Exploding Off Shelves

There's a new product in town in the great state of Washington, and it is making quite an impact.  A marijuana-laced soda has hit stores and proved to be actually quite dangerous to consumers.  Not because of the reasonable amount of 10mg of THC in each bottle, but because the bottles themselves are exploding on store shelves.

Awww...bummer dude...

Employees of a Bellingham pot shop say that one day after receiving their first shipment of Mirth Provisions' pot-infused pomegranate soda—cleverly branded "Legal"—they came in to find broken glass everywhere, Seattle's KOMO News reported.

The soda-bombs were quickly quarantined inside of a steel container, where for the next 10 days they continued to blow up.

Top Shelf Cannabis manager Zach Henifin:

"It sounded like a shotgun going off. You can actually feel it, it was that explosive."

The problem: Not a particularly explosive strain of marijuana, but too much yeast.  Although the pressure was acceptable when the bottles shipped, over time the CO2 inside built up over a period of days until...KABLOOEY.

Two other shops in Vancouver, British Columbia have also had similar issues.

Why didn't Top Shelf just destroy the rest of the bottles instead of building a tremendously loud "bomb box"? Well, Washington's Liquor Control Board requires the manufacturer to dispose of any marijuana products, and Mirth Provisions—located more than 3 hours away from the shop—didn't send someone to pick them up until 9 days later.

When they did eventually get around to it, the bottles began to explode inside of the driver's van, and he bailed, abandoning the rest of the shipment.  Eventually all 330 bottles had popped.

Mirth Founder Adam Stites:

"Sometimes when you're creating new products in a new marketplace, there's a little bit of a learning curve."

He's sending someone for the rest of the bottles this week, and waiting for the Liquor Control Board's ruling on what to do with them.

Whatever'  It will work itself out...for sure...
